DIET AND LIFESTYLE

Diet

It is essential to have a nutritious diet in order to get pregnant and maintain a healthy pregnancy. This also means alcohol, high sugar and fast food should be reduced to an absolute minimum. Skipping meals as well as working or reading while eating are also ill-advised. Treat yourself with the upmost care and make the choices you would make as a parent. Make your meal times special. Give yourself healthy foods that you like and try treating yourself to something new. Ensure there is time and space for your food adventure, to savour your food with no rush or distraction to get the most nutrients out of it; your body gets the most out of the food you eat when it is relaxed.

Make sure to include eggs, fish and meat, some saturated fats (needed for your hormonal health), cold pressed oils, a colourful variety of vegetables, seeds, nuts, fruits, pulses and grains. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, make sure you have enough protein, iron and B12 in your diet and include quality prenatal supplements.

It is important to hydrate your body. I recommend soups, stews and enough water. Also, if you notice that you feel cold in your body, having cold salads and drinks can slow down your digestion and absorption of nutrients. Try to have more warm cooked foods and add ginger, cinnamon and spices to your food and drink.

Lifestyle

Make a quick assessment of your lifestyle. The questions you may ask yourself are: Do I move too little or too much? Do I find time for myself or just work and look after others? Do I rest enough? Do I socialize enough? Do I feel connected to my body or do I spend most of my time in my head? How much alcohol, tea/coffee do I drink? How many cigarettes do I smoke? Am I overweight? Do I exercise and how often? Do I go to bed early enough to get enough sleep? Do I spend too much time on the phone, computer or in front of the TV? How do my daily activities affect my mood and energy levels? What are my stress levels? And finally, what can I do to feel comfortable in my body, clear in my mind, joyful in my heart and have better energy levels

Life in London can be quite demanding and hectic and we tend to put pressure on ourselves to adapt and get up to speed with it. This high pace of living affects us on all fronts, including fertility, so it is important to find a space to slow down and just be in the present moment, to direct your attention and energy inward and restore yourself to balance. This process is called meditation. Please see my Resources and Meditation pages for simple meditations you can easily fit into your daily life.
